While the portable tank is a solid product, there are three issues I faced in using this product.Gravity creates a tank fill issue when the discharge value is lower than the top of the tank. This in and of itself would not be a problem if the tank sewer hose end that connects to the RV trailer discharge port had a shutoff value to stop back flow from the portable tank back to the RV. The lack of a shutoff value also contributes to excess spillage when trying to disconnect the tank sewer hose from the RV connection. Trying to keep the hose higher than the tank, while at the same time trying to disconnect from the trailer is problematic. I purchased a separate shutoff value connection - shouldn't have had too.The major problem I have now with the product is the tank sewer hose at the connection to the portable tank now has a leak after only 4 uses. This is unacceptable since all parts vendors reflect the sewer hose as in backorder condition making replacement unavailable indefinitely. Reflects poorly when parts are not sufficiently available, and especially so when replacement is prematurely necessary.Lastly, both Thetford and the industry need to serious reconsider how connection of sewer hoses to RV are made. The current scheme with 4 pips that snap lock are simply not viable for senior citizens who now have less strength in hands and arms to twist and break the lock. There is a real need for these products to be screw on/off.While the portable tank product is most helpful, design of connections and the lack of a shutoff value make product use a whole lot hard than necessary.Arrived with the wheel popped off. It popped back on fairly easily, but I see where it will likely fall off again in the future. All 4 wheels have a small caps that just pops on the bar to keep them in place, so I foresee this issue with more than just one wheelWas looking specifically for a tote with 4 wheelsEasy to manageThe product is good. However, first the product arrived missing wheel parts, vendor refunded me $50.00. The 1st use I found a small hole in the drain line. The vendor who sold me the product was very responsive in allowing us to return the item. What pain!!! The biggest irritation is that Thetford the manufacturer will not sell parts directly, so you need to find a parts supply.I was a bit too influenced by the better reviews of this product before I bought it. I also watched the polished Thetford promotional video for the SmartTote 2. The actor never actually manipulates liquid, only simulates the dumping process. If you buy this product you should practice several times on your gray water tank to understand the process and make all your mistakes with grey water. WARNING WARNING WARNING: CHECK THE HOSE CLAMP CONNECTION AT THE UNION OF THE DUMP HOSE AND GRAY/BLACK TANK CONNECTOR. Thetford takes pride in telling you that the SmartTote 2 comes "completely assembled, ready to use out of the box." Some joker on the assembly line didn't tighten the clamp on my unit. On inspection, it looked secure. I gave it what I thought was a good pull and it passed. But on the second use, the hose separated from the connector, fortunately on a gray water dump. I can't stress enough that you practice a few times on your gray water tank before you move to a black water dump. UNDERSTAND THIS: If you don't elevate the hose above your tank dump connection and P-trap the tote hose before you disconnect, you will end up with a flood of gray water or black water when you disconnect the hose even though your tank valve is closed and the draining has stopped as evidenced by sound and feel on the hose. Also, the 90-degree sewer dump connector they provide with the tote is junk. Buy a good quality 90-degree threaded sewer connector and the over-priced union to join the two bayonet fittings and you will be much better served.MUST DO: When you have finished a transfer of black water into the tote tank, close the black valve and open your gray water for 2 or 3 seconds to clear the valve, connectors and hose of black water.I am concerned that the hose is the weakest part of this tote tank. I haven't looked closely enough yet but it is possible that the tank-end of the hose is factory pressed on and not replaceable. If that is the case, then I'm probably going to come back and downgrade my rating.Another thing that Thetford doesn't tell you but you will find out. If you don't open the clean-out port while dumping, the tank doesn't vent very well. Opening the clean-out port while dumping will not defeat the overflow warning float.I bought this product to use with my RV and allow me to dump the tanks at home. I don't use it to extend campground stays. It seems solid in construction.I rate it 3-stars because the actual use of the product did not meet my expectations after watching the Thetford advertising.UPDATE: I've returned to downgrade my rating to 1-star. I have used this product now for over two years and have problems with it on every use. There are just too many design flaws to permit this waste tank to be used without some spillage. The proprietary hose and fitting system Thetford uses is poor. The combination door Thetford uses over the hose coupler keeps an unavoidable upward bend in the hose and this contributes to the problem with disconnecting the tank hose from the RV without spillage. If you could mate this tank with a standard dump hose and fittings, it might work better. My black/grey valve is closer to the ground than what might be found on a higher profile rig like a 5th wheel. (My rig is a Lazy Daze) The closer to the ground that your dump valves are, the more problems you are going to experience with this tank. I have adequate and easy access to my residential sewer clean-outs so that is not a problem. We bought this poo tank so we didn’t have to bring our camp trailer down from the mountain every week. We learned a lot our first time. #1 the handle is great when it’s empty, but relatively useless when it’s full. #2 we had to order extra gaskets as the one that was provided went down the drain our first time emptying the unit. #3 we also decided to buy extra hose to use when emptying so we don’t have to unload the unit from our truck while full (getting it up the ramp while full is difficult enough). #4 our first time emptying the unit was a crap-fest. The people in line behind us got quite a laugh from watching us I’m sure. The connections did not stay together, resulting in A sewage explosion. So just know it’s not going to be as easy as it looks. If your just using this in an RV park and don’t have to travel a long ways to dump the sewage I can see it would be easier to just pull behind an ATV or vehicle. As we are using it in the mountains and the dump site is 40 miles away the pull behind feature is not something we utilize.Overall it is helpful, but I’m not sure if it is worth the price. You can make it work tho.The unit generally speaking works well but there are a couple of things preventing that 5th star - both to do with the hose. First off, it is really short. Fully extended, the hose is about 1m long. That isn't a huge problem if you are parked in a field with easy access to the waste tube on the trailer. But if you are on uneven ground or can't get to the waste tube, then you could do with a longer hose. Not a problem, I have other hoses...just extend - and that brings us to the second issue. The connector on this unit is terrible. The slightest bump and its off, leaking the nasty all over the place until you notice and reconnect. I have only used the unit once. In the space of draining a 2/3 full grey tank (thank goodness it didn't let go on the black), it came loose four times. It couldn't be put on any tighter, the pin is tight against the end of the 'loop' - but there isn't a detent for the pin to 'lock in' so it easily slides open.So that was the bad. The good was it was easy to pull when filled about 1/2 full up a 7% hill; more than that, the easy hitch hook made towing with the vehicle a snap. Fit nicely over a 2.5" ball - and this 'locked' in once pulling. I didn't wait until the tanks were full, so I can't speak to the utility of the 'full gauge' but the system seemed to be simple enough - I would cut flow as soon as it started to move as you will have waste in the tube to deal with otherwise. The wheels roll well, and the unit is sturdy.Like having the four wheels, but other than that, the Thetford engineers should go back to the drawing board. Firstly, the extendible handle is tight plastic on plastic and is really sticky. Secondly, the plastic attachments that fit on the end of the hose are so tight, it's all you can do to get them on and off. I even added some Vaseline with little improvement. Lastly, it's very difficult to fill, if the tank is not much lower than your drain, without doing the snaky hose thing. Likewise it is very difficult to drain it completely even on a raised platform at the sewer dump (with the vent open). Part of the problem is that the attachment compartment bottom door is in the way of the hose going straight down. For the money paid, very disappointed.Product looks great. Sturdily built. Everything one needs appears to be on board. Very clever. Ordered on Monday July 2 and received it at our door today, July 4th. I am truly amazed at the service on this item. Thanks Amazon. You are truly amazing. Give you an update after we use it this weekend. We've used this item several times to empty our black and grey tanks on a small camper. Works quite well AFTER hubby made some alterations to it. He had to make a fitting for the hose. So that it goes right down into the sewer pipe. No chance for leakage. This took a bit of doing. Now it is working just excellent and emptying it is a one man job as is flushing it properly. Very happy we have this as it takes the work out of emptying the black tank and no need to move the Camper every week. This is a useless product. My particular one that I purchased had the handle installed upside down. Impossible to tow behind anything like this using as designed with hitch ball. Also the back wheel axle is just sitting pushed into slotted plastic so that comes off all the time. Now let’s see if the seller or manufacturer will rectify the issue. Not holding my breath. It pulls nice but I find that because the hose is at the bottom it will not fill past it so you are emptying it more often also the hose is really short and if waste sits in it the hose will separate from the coupling and I had to glue it back together. It also was missing the rubber seal to prevent leaks when hooking it to the trailer and when I got it it looked like it was a return because the front wheels were assembled together before the rod was put through the actual tank so we had to pry off the lock cap in order to put the wheels on
